Tyrrell County Schools had the privilege of hosting Shana Tucker, a world-class cellist, singer-songwriter, and teaching artist, along with her accompanist Christian Tamburr, for two days of immersive musical experiences. Through a combination of interactive workshops and live performances, our middle and high school band students gained valuable insight into the art of musical improvisation and songwriting.
During the workshops, students explored jazz concepts, developed their ability to think creatively in real time, and engaged in hands-on music-making. The “informances” provided an opportunity for students to not only observe professional musicians in action but also participate in a collaborative learning experience that highlighted the power of storytelling through music.
This program, made possible through Grassroots Arts Funding and the support of the North Carolina Arts Council, underscores our commitment to providing students with high-quality arts education. By working directly with professional musicians, students expanded their understanding of musical expression, performance techniques, and the broader impact of music on communication and teamwork.
We appreciate Shana Tucker and Christian Tamburr for sharing their expertise, passion, and talent with our students, and we look forward to bringing more enriching arts experiences to our schools in the future.
