Tyrrell County Schools is proud to announce a growing network of partnerships designed to improve access to essential health services for students and families across the district. Through collaborations with Washington Regional Medical Center (WRMC), Shriners Children’s, the Martin-Tyrrell-Washington District Health Department, and Trillium Health Resources, the district is taking bold steps to address the medical, dental, and behavioral health needs of students—particularly in a rural setting where access to care can be limited.
WRMC and Shriners: Increasing Access to Primary and Specialty Care
The district is actively working with WRMC and Shriners to establish a strategic, long-term partnership that expands access to critical health services. Areas of support include:
- Primary Care: Physicians are already available to provide general medical support for families in the district.
- Telehealth Services: Plans are underway to offer specialty care—such as dermatology and cardiology—via telemedicine platforms, ensuring students receive timely consultations without the need to travel long distances.
This partnership is currently in the early planning stages, with student needs assessments underway to help determine the most effective next steps.
The Molar Express: Mobile Dental Care for Every Campus
Another exciting development is the district’s collaboration with the Martin-Tyrrell-Washington District Health Department to bring The Molar Express—a mobile dental unit—to every Tyrrell County school. This initiative represents a major advancement in student health services by offering:
- On-site preventive and restorative dental care
- Opportunities for students to establish a consistent dental home
- Increased access to oral health support for families who may face transportation or provider shortages
Trillium Health Resources: Supporting Mental and Behavioral Health
In addition to physical and dental health efforts, Tyrrell County Schools continues its partnership with Trillium Health Resources and DREAM Provider Care Services, a private organization that partners with Trillium to deliver behavioral health and substance use treatment services in eastern North Carolina.The district is also exploring expansion into TeleHealth options to further increase accessibility for students in need of behavioral health support.
